Anime Expo 2014: Max by OchreJelly Anime Expo 2014: Max by OchreJelly
An image for Anime Expo of their mascot character, Max, part of a bundle of images done for the SPJA.

It was fun to work with another style for a while, it felt like I took a jump back in time 10-15 years ago to when I drew anime stuff a lot. Only with, you know, some semblance of skill now (I hope.) Anyways, looking forward to developing the style a bit more in the future.

-- Your friend, Jake-senpai.

PS. Wow, I wrote 2013 in the title. Living in the past, maaaan.

Details and Info

:bulletgreen: Painter 9, I actually got this one done pretty fast, it's just that I didn't keep track. Honest.

Did they commission you to draw it or was it a contest? Is there a sort of reference they want you to follow? This looks amazing. I want to cosplay her.

Commission, in a roundabout way through an outside studio that AX has a working relationship with (the same guys I do the Labyrinth Masquerade art for; their cons are like a block away from eachother and run at the same time.)

There's no reference sheet, but I'm probably going to be working on one for the next time I might draw the character. If I do end up doing that, I might see if it's ok to release it earlier so anyone can have detailed info on the costume.

If you've got anything you might need to know for cosplay, tell me and I'll try and keep it in mind. :)

Thank you so much! Her design is so cool, would be nice to know the ins and outs of the design so I could cosplay her. I'm looking forward to your artwork!

hey, I was gonna start a personal project just to practice with adobe illustrator and was going to make a fake brochure about Anime Expo and wanted to know if I could use this in it? It wouldn't be distributed anywhere or uploaded anywhere. I could send you a copy of the finished product if you wanted and give credit inside

Hey. :) The copy and usage rights are owned by SPJA, so the permissions aren't mine to give unfortunately.

Sorry about that.

I saw this fantastic illustration everywhere! I have mangizes with it on it. So I'm content,

fantastic job!

Awesome, glad you liked it. :) I have no idea how it was used beyond the program cover and a few ads.

I saw a bit of the background of this pic in their "Cosplay Senpai" thing. Made me feel glad I finally became a senpai after all these years.

Its awesome!

And guess what?

By the entrance way. They hand out these: Swag bags, which have a magazine with your illustration on it. And everyone there got one.

And 81 thousand people went to the expo.

So all of those people saw it. And most likely brought it home too.

And you need a badge to get in, and the illustration is on it too

And you deserve that whole audiance your so cool!

while the colors and light and everything is great, I can't help but cringe at the strange way her body is shaped/distorted... I really think it doesn't look natural at all.

Fair enough. It's exaggerated, to be sure, and if I had my way I'd probably have gone over it again in a thousand places... but those were the proportions they wanted in the end.
